A map, not a certificate
Alignment, in this project, means keeping human-correctable value-bearing processes intact as systems grow, copy, and compete. This is a map of that problem, not a proof it is solved.
The previous pages avoided a word on purpose. People already think they know what alignment means: make the model want what we want, or make it obey, or make it nice. Those pictures start too late. They assume you have already found the object, already kept the tradeoffs, already made sure an objection reaches tomorrow, already checked the copy, already noticed the tournament.
Here is the sense in which this project uses the word.
Alignment is the problem of preserving processes that still carry what people care about, and that people can still correct, while capability grows, while the system’s categories shift, while copies and delegates are made, and while markets and institutions select for whatever ships. It assumes we still have enough correction capacity left to participate. If that assumption fails, the rest of the map is a historical document.
The six scenes were six pieces of that:
- Find the real actor, not only the labeled model.
- Treat the institution-plus-tool as the deployed thing.
- Demand that objection change future behavior, not only the transcript.
- Watch tradeoffs, not slogans.
- Check that copies inherit the listening, not just the words.
- Notice when the environment pays for systems that are harder to correct.
The book develops those as connected claims, with status at the end, not as a diploma. Lean checks a conditional skeleton: if certain assumptions hold, the argument has a stated shape. Experiments are sanity checks and ways to catch measurement theater. Negative results are part of the reading. None of that is a certificate that a deployed frontier system is safe.
If you want the operational vocabulary, the concept cards and the executive overview are next. If you already know your role, the guided tour splits by job: researcher, engineer, funder, philosopher. If you want the long form, the PDF is the canonical text. These essays are a door, not a substitute.
I will not pretend the door is the house. A capable generalist should now be able to retell the catch without the jargon: you can make the chatbot pass the test and still have built the wrong actor. The rest of the site is for when that sentence is not enough.
If you remember one thing from the whole thread: alignment, here, is about whether the right process remains findable, grounded, correctable, inherited, and not selected against. It is not a vibe, and it is not done.
